Splendors Of Book And City

The library of Alexandria
spills its build
before the eyes of dead fish
scattered in wooden crates
waiting for the hands of house maidens
          to make their pick
and take those sea creatures
back to the courtyards of their lords.

Their lords have beards
and eat with golden utensils,
when they eat grilled meats from a skewer,
the skewer is made of silver.
When the house maidens go to the market
the lords eat grilled-cheese sandwiches
and cheat on the maidens with their wives,
spending afternoons taking care of themselves
and taking care of their marriages.
Then, when their wives are away,
they do it with the maids,
smashing grape and berry
          on their olive kissing thighs.
